Resonance

The gap between what we can count and what we can feel.

I stood in the water at and the water was cold. The porcelain was white and the tank was empty. I reached into the tank and I felt for the rubber. The gasket was old and it was soft. It had failed and the floor was wet.

A gasket is a small thing but it keeps the house dry. I turned the wrench and the metal was hard. I tightened the nut and the leak stopped. I went to bed but I did not sleep. My hands smelled like brass and old water.

Context: The quiet maintenance of reality. When the invisible seals of our world fail, the floor gets wet.

The Weight of the Tines

I fix fountain pens during the day. People send me pens from cities I will never visit. They send me pens that belonged to grandfathers and pens that survived wars. I sat at my bench later that morning and the light was gray.

I had a Pelikan 400NN on the mat. The nib was bent and the gold was dull. I used a small hammer and I used a burnishing tool. I worked until the tines were straight and the gap was right. I dipped the pen in ink and I wrote on a piece of paper. The ink was blue and the line was smooth. The pen did not know it was eighty years old. It only knew that the ink wanted to reach the paper.

The phone rang and I answered it. It was a man named David. David works for a brand that makes backpacks. He was in an office and I could hear the air conditioning through the phone. He was not happy. We had made a film together.

It was a film about the sound of a zipper in a quiet forest. It was a film about the way a strap feels against a wool coat. David looked at his screen and he saw the number 824. This was the view count.

“The views are low,” David said.

His voice was thin. “We spent money and the number is small.” I looked at my workbench. I looked at the Pelikan pen. I thought about the gasket in the toilet. “The number is 824,” I said. “But you did not see the messages.”

“Messages do not fill a spreadsheet,” David said.

Human Messages (The Reality)

The tension between a metric and a miracle. One can be measured; the other can be felt.

I opened my email. I had from people who watched the film. One was from a woman in Oregon. She said she had been inside for because her legs were tired and her spirit was heavy. She watched the film and she smelled the pine trees. She said she put on her boots and she walked to the end of her driveway. She said it was the first time she felt the sun in a long time.

Another message was from a man in Maine. He liked the sound of the zipper. He said it reminded him of his father packing for a fishing trip in . He said he had not thought about that trip in . He thanked us for the memory.

David did not care about the woman in Oregon. He did not care about the man in Maine. He wanted the number to be 100,000. He wanted a crowd but he did not want to talk to anyone. He wanted the map to be the territory. But the map is just paper and the territory is mud and rock and blood.

The Weight of the Stone

The frustration is a quiet thing. It lives in the gap between what we can measure and what we can feel. A brand hires a creator because the creator knows how to make people feel a thing. The creator uses light and they use sound and they use silence. They build a bridge from one heart to another.

Then the brand looks at the bridge and they do not ask how many people crossed it with tears in their eyes. They ask how much the bridge weighs. They ask for the dimensions of the stones.

We live in a time where we believe that if a thing cannot be counted it does not exist. We believe that 10,000 people who do not care are better than 100 people who are changed. It is a lie but it is a loud lie. It is a lie told by people who have forgotten what it is like to fix a pen or a toilet. They have forgotten that the world is made of matter and meaning.

Attention (The Gate)

HORIZONTAL

Resonance (The House)

VERTICAL

Data tells you how wide. Resonance tells you how deep.

There is a statistic that people in marketing like to use. They say that attention is the only currency. But they are wrong. Attention is the gate but resonance is the house. You can stand at the gate all day and never go inside. Most videos are gates that lead to empty fields.

Reframing the data is the only way to stay sane. A video with 1,000,000 views and zero comments is a failure of the spirit. It is a loud noise in an empty room. But a video with 500 views and fifty shares is a revolution. It means the message was a seed and the seed found soil.

1.4%

The Conversion of Souls

If 12 people write to you out of 824, the resonance is a miracle.

If you have 824 views and twelve people wrote to you it means the resonance is high. It means 1.4% of your audience was moved enough to speak. In the world of human connection that is a miracle. In the world of spreadsheets it is a rounding error.

This is the struggle of the modern creator. You are hired for your soul but you are judged by your shadow. The shadow is the metric. It is the shape you cast on the wall. The soul is the light that makes the shadow possible. The brand wants a bigger shadow but they do not want to give you more light.

I told David about the woman in Oregon. I told him about the man in Maine. He was silent for a long time. I could hear him typing. He was probably adding a note to a slide. He was trying to turn a feeling into a bullet point. “We need more social proof,” David said finally. “The video looks lonely.”

He was right about that. The internet is a place of mirrors. People do not like to be the first one to the party. They stand outside and they look through the window. If the room looks empty they stay on the sidewalk. They need to see that others are already inside. They need to see that the floor is holding the weight.

Priming the Feed

This is where the mechanical meets the emotional. You can have the best pen in the world but if the ink will not flow the pen is a stick. You have to prime the feed. You have to get the air out of the channel.

When you are launching something into the world you often have to prime the feed of public attention. If a brand wants their quality to be seen they have to make sure the gate is open. They might need to comprar visitas en youtube just to show the world that the room is worth entering.

It is not about faking the feeling. It is about making sure the feeling has a chance to be felt. It is the initial pressure in the pipes that allows the water to reach the faucet.

I finished the Pelikan pen. I filled it with green ink this time. I wrote a letter to the owner. I told him the nib was straight and the feed was clean. I did not tell him about the toilet or the backpack film. I told him the pen was ready to work.

The problem with data is that it is horizontal. it spreads out and it covers everything. It tells you how far and how wide. But meaning is vertical. It goes down. It tells you how deep. You cannot measure depth with a ruler that was made for width. You cannot measure a forest by counting the trees if you do not know the names of the birds.

The Noise and the Silence

David called me back . The video had more views now. The number was 4,200. He sounded better. He felt like he was winning. The social proof had worked and the algorithm had noticed the movement. People were clicking because they saw that other people had clicked. It is a simple machine but it works.

“Now we are getting somewhere,” David said. “Are there more messages?” I asked. “Two more,” he said. “One guy asked about the price of the backpack. The other guy said the music was too loud.”

The resonance was gone. The crowd had arrived and they brought their noise with them. The woman in Oregon and the man in Maine were buried under a pile of people who were just passing through. The number was higher but the weight was lower. The bridge was full of people but they were all walking in different directions.

I looked at my hands. The ink was under my fingernails. It would stay there for a few days. Ink is stubborn. It wants to leave a mark. A spreadsheet is clean. You can delete a row and it is like it never existed. You can change a number and the past disappears. But you cannot unfix a pen. You cannot unfeel a story.

We are building a world where the gasket does not matter as long as the water meter is turning. We are building a world where the nib can be broken as long as the box is pretty. But eventually the floor gets wet. Eventually the paper stays blank.

I think about the gap every day. I think about the 824 people who saw the silence in the forest. I think about the twelve people who felt the sun. I would rather talk to them than a million people who are just looking for the exit.

David is happy now because his boss is happy. The graph is moving in the right direction. He will ask me to make another film next month. He will ask for more views and more speed. I will say yes and I will make it.

I will try to find the sound of the wind or the smell of the rain. I will try to reach the woman in Oregon again. I will do the work of the soul and I will let David do the work of the spreadsheet.

We are all fixing something at . Sometimes it is a pipe and sometimes it is a memory. The only thing that matters is that the connection holds. The only thing that matters is that the ink hits the paper and the water stays in the tank.

I put the Pelikan pen in a box and I mailed it back to its home. It is a good pen. It has a soul made of gold and hard rubber. It does not care about the number of letters it writes. It only cares about the one being written right now.

We should all be so lucky. We should all be so focused on the line. The views will come and the views will go but the resonance is the only thing that stays in the wood. It is the only thing that survives the night.
