To understand why this is so dangerous for your wallet, you have to look at how the process actually works. In a perfect world, an HVAC professional performs what’s called a Manual J Load Calculation. This is a rigorous mathematical assessment of your home’s heat gain and loss.
It looks at the R-value of your insulation, the orientation of your windows to the sun, the local climate data, and even the number of people living in the house. It’s supposed to dictate the size of the equipment you need.

If they roll their eyes or tell you those are “only for server rooms” or “don’t work in the cold,” they are giving you a gift. They are telling you, loudly and clearly, that they have reached the edge of their map.
The sheet metal in the attic is a monument to a comfort the installer could visualize, but the architecture could never actually afford.
Don’t let your home become a victim of someone else’s inventory. The most expensive sentence in your quote isn’t about the price of the copper or the labor of the crew. It’s the invisible tax of a closed mind.
Whether you’re designing an escape room or trying to survive a humid July, the best solution is rarely the one that requires a sledgehammer to make it fit. It’s the one that respects the space it’s meant to serve.
